All about Books
This is the page where I will be discussing what I'm reading, reviewing those books and be open to suggestions to keep adding to my To Be Read pile. Honestly, I'm never going to get through that thing anyway, so the more the merrier.
Today's book is one I'd been looking at and bought after not realising it was out now. :) We're talking feminism- all about the equality. Therefore, this is also a spoiler-free review.
Author: Jennifer Mathieu
Part of a trilogy: No, it’s a standalone
Original publication date: 19th September 217 (US) and 21st September 2017 (UK)
My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (Read September 2017)
To the right is the US cover and personally my favourite one.
"It occurs to me that this is what it means to be a feminist...all it is is girls supporting each other and wanting to be treated like human beings in a world that's always finding ways to tell them they're not."
I think this quote sums up the book and the word feminism. For so long, I didn't want to attach the label to myself, but then I realised labels don't always have to matter and it is a part of how I am, so, now I'll happily say I'm a feminist.
A short review, since the book has only just been released. It made me laugh and cry, I loved all of the 'zines'. The overall plot was great and highlighted very important things. it felt really relevant to nowadays and quite relatable. This book also got brownie points for detailing and showing what an American high school is like without assuming all audiences automatically know. It was nice to realise the author knows not all people reading this book are American.
On the more negative side, I do think Viv could have been more patient with people at times, and Claudia a bit more understanding, but I guess the characters are teenagers. It felt sometimes as though the romance was a bit rushed, but overall, was handled well.
And the UK cover- there is a bit too much pink in it for my liking. I know pink is traditionally a colour for girls, but I've never really been a fan.
In the end, I've rated this book with a well deserved 5 stars and it would perhaps be nice to see more books like this in the future.
Have you read this book yet? What did you think of it, if you have? All the best.
Hi, I'm an animal lover and have a degree. You can usually find me either reading or writing. Failing that, I might have actually ventured into the outside world...
